Lots of swindles promise riches in exchange for working from home. The most common scam is where a company offers you an opportunity to work from home that requires money up-front for essential materials. After you send the money the materials never arrive and the people behind the fraud have moved on to their next dodgy deal.
A similar scam offers the chance to make consumer goods or craft items at home in return for a quick profit. The promoters of these schemes typically reject all the work you send them by telling you that they don’t meet their ‘high standards’. You’re left to sell the items on your own – if you can.
Spotting these cons is not an easy task but there are certain clues. Adverts for fraudulent employment opportunities often appear in the classified pages of newspapers and magazines and there are also many bogus work-from-home websites.
The adverts typically promise good pay – for example, £50,000 – in a short period of weeks or months for very little effort. Remember - if the opportunity looks too good to be true, it probably is.
